The Red Army was determined to grind down attacking German units with a combination of mines and artillery fire. The density of artillery in the salient was unusual there were more artillery regiments in the salient than infantry regiments. Just read up on a good example of the use of artillery defensively in a tank battle at Kursk, the Soviets used massive amounts of artillery (there were more Soviet artillery regiments than infantry at Kursk!) to separate the German armour from their infantry support by targeting the soft infantry, then using anti-tank artillery to fire on the armoured targets without the risk of being overrun or outmaneuvered by infantry.
